A Non-invasive Cosmetic Procedure
Getting teeth whitening by dentists is a very simple, non-invasive cosmetic procedure which changes the color of tooth enamel to a whiter shade. Most adults believe that an attractive smile is an important social asset. In fact, having whiter teeth is a top aesthetic concern among adults. Seeing a dentist for teeth whitening is the first step toward achieving a whiter, more attractive smile.
Before Teeth Whitening
Teeth can become discolored for a number of reasons. Things we eat and drink, such as coffee and tea can stain tooth enamel and cause discoloration. Before undergoing teeth whitening by dentists, there are a few things to consider:
- Teeth whitening works only on tooth enamel. Any crowns or fillings you have will not be affected by the process.
- Have your teeth whitened first and then have and old fillings replaced afterward, to match the new color of your enamel.
- Having an in-office, dentist teeth whitening is not permanent. You will need to come in for a touch up every few years.
The Whitening Process
Teeth whitening by dentists usually requires only two visits. During the first visit, molds will be taken of your teeth and used to create custom, clear, plastic trays. During the second visit, you will try on the trays for proper fit and any necessary adjustments will be made. You will also be given by your dentist a teeth whitening solution that will be put in the trays and worn for at least an hour a day for a few weeks. The number of weeks will depend on the amount of staining present on the enamel and the desired level of whitening. During the bleaching process, you may experience minor sensitivity in your teeth. This will subside once you have stopped bleaching.
