Our office partners with licensed sleep physicians to help diagnose patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and bruxism (teeth grinding). For patients who experience symptoms, we offer a take-home sleep study that tracks their sleeping habits. It is the same technology used in sleep centers but offers the comfort of your own bed without having a doctor watch over you. The data is shared with a licensed sleep physician to determine what the best treatment options are.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea can disrupt sleep and leave you feeling exhausted and drained after a full night’s rest. In patients that experience sleep apnea, the airway becomes blocked during sleep after the muscles in the throat relax. The body’s natural response to the lack of oxygen is to startle you awake, triggering the muscles to contract and the airway to reopen. This can occur several times during the night without you even knowing, which is why you feel tired the next day. Symptoms of sleep apnea:
- Loud Snoring
- Waking up gasping for air
- Waking with a dry mouth
- Waking with a headache
- Difficulty staying asleep
- Daytime Fatigue
Treating Sleep Apnea/Snoring
Our office offers the SomoDent sleep appliance to treat sleep apnea as an alternative to CPAP therapy or corrective surgery. The device is worn at night and holds the lower jaw forward slightly to help keep the airway open. For more information click here.
